There is a lot of stigmas associated with the term "black therapist". People on the outside often perceive that black therapists are only trained to work with black people and that they don't have the skills to work with white clients. This is just untrue. A black therapist can be of any profession and has no limits as to what they will be able to do for their patients. They can help them through so many different mental health disorders ranging from depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, substance abuse...the list goes on. Black therapists can give their clients a safe and comfortable space to talk about anything without feeling judged. In a world full of hate, prejudice, and racism it is important that people of color find someone who will be able to work with them through their difficult time.
People of color tend to suffer from mental health issues (especially African Americans) more than any other ethnicity but are less likely to seek out services for these issues because of the stigma that is associated with seeking help for mental health issues (s). It has been proven that people who have experienced trauma have lower levels of resilience than their non-traumatized peers. This makes them more vulnerable to developing mental health issues later on in life. The way that most people cope with trauma is by blocking it out and hoping that it goes away when people hold onto these negative experiences then they are more likely to develop PTSD. Trauma does not have to be a violent event but can be anything that you have experienced as a child that you did not understand at the time. It can include sexual abuse, physical abuse, witnessing domestic violence, or losing a loved one. Black culture tends to steer towards religion as an outlet for trauma but often times religion can be an unhealthy coping mechanism because it tends to make us forget about our painful experiences and gives us false hope for a better tomorrow when we die.
