How To Fight The Stigma Of Seeking Therapy In the Tampa Black Community?

There is a stigma of seeking therapy in the black community. The fear and lack of confidence about treatment are deeply rooted in our culture but it's time to take a step back and see what’s going on.

Black Americans are diagnosed with mental disorders at nearly five times the rate of white Americans, yet only 15% use psychotherapy for their problems as opposed to 42% often found in other ethnicities. This inequality continues throughout other parts of mental health treatment, where African Americans are less likely to be prescribed medication or receive cognitive behavioral therapy than whites. Another statistic that tells the same story is that only 5% of African Americans receive inpatient treatment for their mental health issues.

A major reason for the low level of use is the negative attitudes toward therapy. How many times have we heard our friends say, “I can’t believe you are going to a shrink. You’re not crazy! Do you see what I’m saying? You don’t need a therapist.”

Many people have something dear to them that they can’t talk about. As a result, they become fearful of being labeled as crazy and being taunted with words such as “psycho” or “nut.” For others, the reasons for not seeking help are more complex than just the stigma alone.

Did you know that those who are poor and/or Black face an increased risk of mental disorders? It appears that the stress of poverty itself is associated with more symptoms of depression and anxiety among blacks. Money also means power in other ways, which leads to a disruption in family life and friendships.

Therapy can be very beneficial to all communities and especially to the black community of the Tampa Bay Area.
